Best Time to Visit the Hudson Valley and the Catskills

The Hudson Valley and the Catskills mountains and forests region begin just some miles north of New York City. This quiet region is full of historic sites and outdoor opportunities as hiking, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, canoeing, skiing or snow shoeing... Ski resorts offer entertainment all year round. 

It’s really a delightful vacation region, combining intense signs of history, with beautiful valley and mountain sceneries and plenty of outdoor activities.

BEST TIME TO VISIT THE HUDSON VALLEY AND THE CATSKILLS

Autumn is a very popular period: foliage spectacle and agreeable temperatures call many people to the region. Spring (in the case of the Hudson Valley) or summer (in the case of the Catskills) are also good periods for visits. 

Weather in these region isn’t very different from that of New York City. But there are differences due to the higher altitude influence (in the case of the Catskills Mountains) or to topology, in the case of more protected valleys. The winter colds that strike New York are also very present in the Catskills and in the Hudson Valley. As expected summers in the Catskills are fresher than in New York.

As in New York, the weather is very changeable, and precipitation is significant though moderate all over the year. Snow is concentrated in the November to March period and is more intense in the Catskills.


WHEN NOT TO GO TO HUDSON VALLEY AND THE CATSKILLS

Winter is the period you should avoid, unless you want to enjoy the ski or other winter outdoors sports in the Catskills. 

For those who want to avoid crowds weekends are also a bad time.
