MAMMOTH LAKES, BISHOP AND MONO LAKE, CALIFORNIA
Best Time to Go & Visit & Travel to California
Mammoth Lakes, in the
Sierra Nevada foothills, Central California, involves more than
100 lakes and streams, and is the second major Californian ski
center, after Lake Tahoe. But Mammoth Lakes isn't only a winter
resort town: it's also a top world fly-fishing center and offers
plenty of outdoor activities: climbing, hiking, kayaking, biking...
Bishop, some miles
north of Mammoth Lakes, is also a top skiing, fishing and
climbing center.
Mono Lake, a couple of dozen
miles north Bishop, is a vital habitat for millions of migratory
and nesting birds, and namely for Californian gulls.

TRAVEL TO MAMMOTH LAKES, BISHOP AND MONO LAKE
The best time to visit
Mammoth
Lakes or Bishop depends mainly of
what you intend.
If you
intend to practice ski, then November through April are
obviously the best
months to visit Mammoth Lakes and Bishop (do not forget that
Mammoth Lakes and Bishop is the California's largest skiing
center after Tahoe Lake).
But if you are interested in fishing or biking, or wildlife
watching, or golf (Mammoth Lakes offers a golf course) then
summer is the best time.
Obviously, intermediate seasons as Spring (the
top season for watching birds in Mono Lake) or Fall also offer
plenty of opportunities, without big crowds and with a normally nice and pleasant
weather (they are also the cheapest seasons for accommodation).
WHEN NOT
TO GO TO THE
MAMMOTH LAKES, BISHOP AND MONO LAKE
Mammoth Lakes and Bishop tend to be packed in
winter weekends. If possible, avoid
the weekends (it's also a way of getting big discounts on accommodation.
The week before Christmas is an exceptional time for discounts.
If you want to avoid the crowds, then... avoid the
Summer, the
Winter and
holiday months and periods.
On weekends, visitors and
their cars congest many of roads and facilities around (in summer months, weekdays are better though also busy).
